Solicitor & Tax Adviser

Femi Ogunshakin

Welcome to my website. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

I’m the guy who woke up at 16 and decided he wanted a career in tax. Just kidding—I’m not sure that person actually exists. The truth is, I stumbled into the profession back in the late 80s, thinking (as you do when you’re young) that it would just be a temporary move. Yet here I am, more than three decades later, still having a whale of a time and honestly dreading the thought of retirement.

My Professional Journey

Early Days

Tax Collector at Inland Revenue

My tax career started at Inland Revenue (now HM Revenue & Customs), where my primary job was persuading taxpayers to settle their debts—or turning up at their door alongside a bailiff with a distraint order allowing goods to be seized to settle those debts. Needless to say, I was quite relieved when, upon promotion, I transitioned to auditing employers’ PAYE records, preparing me well for my future move from civil servant to tax professional.
Becoming a Tax Professional

Big 4 Accountancy Firms

I then moved into a role at a Big 4 accountancy firm, turning from tax collector to tax advisor—the classic poacher turned gatekeeper. My initial focus was tax investigations, assisting clients after problems had already arisen. Later, another Big 4 firm provided me with the opportunity to become proactive, advising clients on preventing tax pitfalls, streamlining their processes, and ensuring compliance with HMRC guidelines, thus saving both money and stress.
UK Banking

In-House Experience

To better understand how clients use and interpret tax advice, I moved in-house, joining a top-10 UK bank. There, as part of the Group Tax Department, I advised internal stakeholders, including retail banking, investment banking, and the Group Legal and HR departments.

Transition to Law and Establishing Loftus Stowe

The financial crisis of 2008 sparked a turning point. After leaving banking and briefly working in tax planning at a boutique firm, I finally pursued my long-held ambition to qualify as a solicitor, achieving this in 2011. This step allowed me to combine all my accumulated experience—tax collection, investigations, proactive planning, and legal advice—into one comprehensive, multidisciplinary service.

I founded Loftus Stowe, a consultancy practice affiliated with Nexa Law, a firm authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Through Loftus Stowe, I offer a seamless blend of tax and legal services, providing clients—individuals, businesses, and professionals alike—with practical, integrated support.

My Approach

My extensive experience equips me to deal effectively with HMRC—one of the UK’s most influential regulatory authorities—and to navigate complex situations on behalf of my clients. My goal is always holistic: understanding your unique challenges and channelling decades of professional insight into solutions that are realistic, practical, and affordable.

I take immense pride in the positive feedback from clients who trust my guidance and value my approach.
